After installation to your hard drive

Okay, you have installed Linguas OS to your hard drive! Congratulations!
One of the very first things that we recommend, if you haven't already done so, is join
[the Linguas OS Yahoo! group]. You'll be able to ask us for help on this group.
We also recommend that you join the Linux for Translators Yahoo! group.
There are professional translators on that list that are already quite experienced in using the tools that Linguas OS includes.
Now, we recommend that you add some additional tools to your system to round it out.
Right click on your desktop again, and select the "Admin-tools" menu.
Find "Synaptic", the package management program. (Click here to see how Synaptic works. Of course, Synaptic has excellent help documentation, as well.)
Linguas OS will ask you to input the root password.
You will have given it this password during installation, of course, and remember it now.
There are literally thousands of packages available to you, to be automatically downloaded
and installed with just a few mouse clicks..
Here are a few that we recommend.
- gnucash - financial software for managing the financial end of the business
- the GIMP for image manipulatio
- Scribus for DTP
- Pidgin for instant messaging (works with MSN, Yahoo! messenger, AIM, and other IM protocols!)
- StarDict - multilingual dictionary
- if you have a scanner, you'll want to install Xsane
- Mozilla Sunbird is a great calendar program.
To find them, click on the "Search" button and enter the name. You can find all kinds of other programs for whatever else you may need in the same manner. There are even tons of games. I recommend LBreakout, personally, and Icebreaker.
You can check as many of these as you like before choosing "Apply" at the top of the window to
add the packages. You will note that, when you choose a program, Synaptic will tell you that
it must add additional libraries or software to make your chosen program function. These libraries
are like windows .dll files. Don't be alarmed. Synaptic is just being smart, and adding everything
you need to make everything work as it should.
If Fluxbox is difficult for you, we recommend that you install the [kde-desktop].
This is an powerful and user-friendly desktop system that looks/feels much more like windows.
You will be able to find your way around more easily. Once KDE has been added,
you can log out of the current interface (fluxbox) and log back in to KDE.
At the log-in screen, choose "session type", and then KDE.
Once you're back in, things may look a little more familiar to you.
Understand, all of these are recommendations.
There are numerous options available for each type of application you desire or require.
Also, remember, we are here to assist you.
If you use KDE, it will automatically enter new applications in it's application menu.
Fluxbox won't do this for you. You will have to edit the fluxbox menu.
The script LAppFinder in the Linguas OS Scripts menu will assist you with this.
